The use of an AED is an important aspect of being a DMT
-
-

A DMT must be competent in the use of an A.E.D. (utilising the 1-2-3 operating system) and providing early defibrillation. The DMT must be aware of the AED Agorithmic approach.
AED Algorithm

Remember. The AED Algorithm does not exist in isolation from the ATLS ABCDE Approach. The AED Algorithm operates using the ATLS approach. There are certain fundamental rules that must apply:
- Stick to the ABCDE / AED Algorithm.
- Work as a team with defined roles. A team always needs a Leader.
- Minimise breaks in CPR. The only time CPR is halted is for rhythm analysis and / or defibrillation.
- Give good ventilation with A BMV & oxygen.
- Insert an iGEL. This is the ONLY time you can do this without sedation. Remember, your casualty is currently dead. So will not gag.
- When you have gained a secure airway, its NOT 30:2… Ventilate ate 14-16 breaths per min & chest compressions at 100-120 per/min
- If you get signs of life after defibrillation. Run the ABCDE’s with all the relevant interventions.
