The provision of emergency and ongoing care in a saturation chamber is logistically difficult. Its is undoubtably why the DMT program was initiated. DMAC 28 address the additional equipment (supplementing DMAC 15) and required infrastructure in a saturation environment that is aimed at providing advanced medical care capabilities. Every
Saturation Diver will be orientated to their companies implementation of the DMAC 28 requirements. On DDC will be dedicated to the care of a potential casualty, this DDC may be a large wet pot used for bell access (this is desired) or a designated living DDC.
Regardless of the sat system design. It is essential that the DMT’s are prepared to receive an injured diver. Remember the DMT’s will generally have a minimum of 20 minutes preparation time if a medical emergency is declared in a diver returning to the bell. This 20 minutes is preparation time.
The DMT’s should drill scenarios on the receiving of an injured diver from a bell. The ATLS roles (AIRWAY, AIRWAY ASSISTANT, CIRCULATION & RUNNER) should be used. This is the only way to truly prepare for a real emergency.
Ongoing Care
Providing ongoing care are key components of a DMT’s role. Asking a DMT to take on the role of a nurse is a huge undertaking. This is a profession that takes 3 years of University training (as a basis). Clearly a 2 week course is no replacement for this. There are some areas that can really help, refer to the Tertiary Care & Ongoing Care In Saturation lessons, these are really helpful. It is also helpful to have a good awareness of appropriate documentation;
